Lake Kerkini is located in Northern Greece and is one of Europe’s top bird watching destinations. I’ve visited the area twice – January 2017 and January 2018 – on a photography holiday. The beauty of this trip is that there’s plenty of opportunities to photograph these amazing birds. And because they can come up and close, especially when you’re on the shore you can get a good mix of action shots as well as portraits.
On my first trip Lake Kerkini was frozen due to a really bad winter. This meant we were unable to go out on the lake and photograph the dalmatian pelicans from a boat. Because of this I returned a year later to experience photographing the birds as they flew alongside the boat and landed on the water. The birds know that the fisherman will have plenty of food for them so they’re happy to follow the boats.
